Green tea is worth two percent: what actually shrinks visceral fat

There is no shortage of advice about visceral fat, and all of it sounds equally important. So instead of a list, Sten Ekberg drew a scale - how much of the total effect each single item accounts for. The biggest one turns out not to be something you do, but a consequence of everything else.

A minute and a half against an hour. The slice on the dial is measured, not estimated. The drawing is ours.

The protein paradox, and a sausage on Uršlja gora

A bar with twenty grams of protein, and a home-made sausage at seventeen hundred metres. The experiments say something awkward about which of the two is closer to the thing we're all avoiding.

  • ZNOJENJE I DETOKSIKACIJA

SWEATING AND DETOX - saunas are sold as a way of flushing toxins out of the body. Sweat is roughly ninety-nine percent water with salts, and its job is cooling. But the claim did not come from nowhere: a 2012 systematic review by Sears and colleagues found that arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury do turn up in sweat, and in exposed people sometimes in greater amounts than in urine. That same review says these studies are few and small and that it still has to be shown whether this does anyone any good. What is certain: whatever the body breaks down and clears out, the liver and the kidneys are what do it.

  • HLADAN TUŠ I IMUNITET

COLD SHOWERS AND IMMUNITY - it is often claimed that a daily cold shower strengthens the immune system, wards off seasonal viruses and prevents illness. A large randomised controlled trial on 3,018 people found that those who finished their shower with cold water for a month had 29 percent fewer days off work. But the number of days on which they actually felt ill was no different from the control group: they stayed home less often without being less ill.

  • ZELENI ČAJ I METABOLIZAM

GREEN TEA AND METABOLISM - green tea extract and the catechin EGCG are sold as fat burners that melt weight off on their own. Examine, an independent database that sells no supplements, works through dozens of human trials and concludes that there is an effect on body fat, but that it is small and unreliable, and that on metabolic rate overall there is no significant influence. What little shows up appears only at high doses of 400 to 500 milligrams of EGCG a day, and depends almost entirely on the person not being a habitual caffeine drinker.

  • KAVA I KRVNI TLAK

COFFEE AND BLOOD PRESSURE - it is widely believed that drinking coffee inevitably leads to chronic hypertension and vascular damage due to caffeine. Comprehensive systematic reviews and meta-analyses covering over 140,000 participants show that coffee causes only a temporary, short-term blood pressure spike within the first hour in casual drinkers. Regular coffee drinkers develop full tolerance, meaning moderate intake of two to four cups daily does not increase the risk of long-term hypertension or cardiovascular disease.

  • JABUČNI OCAT

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR - social media frequently claims that consuming apple cider vinegar daily before meals directly melts body fat and drastically accelerates metabolism. A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials involving 463 participants showed that vinegar slows gastric emptying and modestly reduces peak postmeal blood sugar, but its effect on weight loss is a modest 1.2 to 1.9 kilograms over three months. Without altering total caloric intake, apple cider vinegar has no direct impact on fat burning.

  • POST

16:8 FASTING - it is a popular belief that restricting food intake to a window of just eight hours a day creates unique metabolic advantages that inevitably melt fat. Large analyses and clinical trials from the independent database Examine prove that intermittent fasting offers no special magic for weight loss compared to a standard diet, but merely serves as a psychological tool to more easily achieve a caloric deficit. If a person consumes more calories than they burn within that short window, they will inevitably gain weight regardless of the prolonged daily fast.

  • REDOSLIJED JELA

FOOD ORDER - It is widely claimed that eating protein and vegetables before simple carbohydrates within the same meal drastically reduces postmeal blood sugar spikes and helps manage insulin resistance. In practice, a randomized crossover study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport confirmed that food order has a measurable impact: participants who ate jasmine rice after chicken and broccoli had significantly lower blood glucose levels 30 minutes after eating (106 mg/dL compared to 133 mg/dL when eating rice first). Meta-analyses show that this approach slows gastric emptying and stimulates GLP-1 secretion, making it a simple, cost-free tool for stabilizing postprandial glycemia in daily life without requiring changes to total caloric intake.

  • TIROZIN

TYROSINE - It is widely claimed that the amino acid tyrosine is a highly safe and effective dietary supplement that boosts dopamine production, increases mental focus, and improves cognitive performance under stress. In practice, a large-scale genetic study analyzing data from over 270,000 participants in the UK Biobank revealed unexpected long-term risks: elevated blood tyrosine levels were associated with a shorter lifespan in men by an average of 0.9 years. Using Mendelian randomization, researchers identified a probable causal relationship in men, whereas no such negative impact on longevity was detected in women. In practice, this suggests that while tyrosine provides acute cognitive benefits, chronic and uncontrolled supplementation of high doses in "brain-boosting" stacks may carry serious, sex-specific risks for long-term survival.

  • KOLAGEN

COLLAGEN - It is widely claimed that taking dietary collagen supplements in powder or capsule form dramatically rejuvenates the skin, erases wrinkles, and repairs damaged joint cartilage. In practice, two meta-analyses involving more than 2,300 total participants showed that oral hydrolyzed collagen can modestly improve skin hydration and elasticity after eight weeks, but many studies are of low quality and frequently combine collagen with other active substances like vitamin C and zinc. Regarding joint health, a systematic review of 19 trials revealed that for autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis, collagen has no effect compared to a placebo, while offering only mild and inconsistent pain relief for osteoarthritis.

  • MAGNEZIJ ZA SAN

MAGNESIUM FOR SLEEP - the claim is that a magnesium supplement speeds up falling asleep and cures insomnia. A 2026 clinical trial in 155 adults found that 250 milligrams of magnesium bisglycinate a day for four weeks gives a statistically significant but very small improvement on the Insomnia Severity Index, an effect size of d = 0.2. A systematic review of nine studies with 7,582 participants found highly inconsistent results: sleep improves mainly in older people with low blood levels of the mineral, while healthy people on a balanced diet see no measurable benefit.

  • OCAT PRIJE JELA

VINEGAR BEFORE A MEAL - the claim is that a spoon of vinegar just before eating drastically lowers blood sugar and helps with weight loss. What has been measured is that vinegar slows gastric emptying, so the post-meal glucose peak drops by 31 to 40 per cent, while total glucose exposure over two hours stays unchanged. A meta-analysis of seven clinical trials with 463 participants found a small drop in fasting glucose but also a rise in insulin, and weight-loss trials showed a loss of 1.2 to 1.9 kilograms over twelve weeks.
